The Unitarian Universalist faith has a strong tradition of lay led services and ministry, an outgrowth of our focus on social witness and action. 2008 - 2009 programsSpiritual Hospitality Workshop 'Talking To Strangers' Spiritual Hospitality refers to the practices of many different faith communities as they reach out and welcome others into their group. The practices have a common thread of mindful communication. Seen through the lens of our UU Principles, mindful communication is a way to actively demonstrate a belief in the inherent worth and dignity of each person by working towards an active empathy in our relationships. Talking to strangers isn’t easy for most people. There’s some risk, involved (what if you're rejected?) AND you have to figure out what to say. When we understand what happens whenever we speak (did you know your blood pressure goes up?) and the basis for a satisfactory exchange we can better appreciate our own and others’ feelings when we get to know one another. 'Talking to Strangers' is suitable for membership committee members, greeters, ushers, those interested in approaches to non-violent communication and persons interested in communication and hospitality as a spiritual discipline. This workshop combines experiential learning and discussion in a focused 2 to 2.5 hours. Individual session size limited to 8 - 10. Participants need only bring a pencil or pen and some scrap paper. Cost is $2 per participant.
